Story

A dark rocky reef rises against white and blue-grey waves, set beneath a misty blue-grey sky. The scene is rendered in oil on wood, painted in 1913 by George Wesley Bellows, and the piece is held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Bellows, who lived from 1882 to 1925, worked within American realism and the Ashcan School, and also created the notable painting Florence Davey. One detail worth noticing is how the pale waves break around the dark stone, giving the reef a sense of being surrounded on multiple sides by shifting water. The misty quality of the sky adds a soft, hazy edge to the horizon, blending the atmosphere into the sea below. Together these elements give the rocky coastal subject a quiet, weathered presence within the composition.
