The Grove - Monhegan

Story

Tall trees rise along the edge of a shoreline, their trunks and branches opening onto a view of blue water and rugged cliffs below. The scene blends yellows, greens, and dark blues to suggest sunlight filtering through foliage onto rock and sea. The painting, titled The Grove - Monhegan, was made in 1911 in oil and is held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Its creator, George Wesley Bellows (1882–1925), worked within American realism and the Ashcan School, movements grounded in direct observation of everyday scenes. Worth noticing is how the trees act as a natural frame, drawing the eye past their dark trunks toward the brighter expanse of ocean and cliff beyond, giving the composition a sense of depth and contrast between shadow and open light.
