Story

A man stands quietly in shallow water near a scattering of logs, his figure set against a backdrop of green, brown, and white hues. The scene is built from small touches of color that give the water and shoreline a soft, textured feel. This small panel was painted in 1884 and is held today at the Yale University Art Gallery. The artist, Georges Seurat (1859–1891), was a French painter associated with Neo-impressionism and pointillism, techniques that relied on tiny dabs of pure color to form a unified image. One detail worth noting is how the logs beside the fisherman break up the water's surface, adding structure to the otherwise calm, muted composition and drawing the eye toward the standing figure.
