Story
A wide field of green and reddish growth spreads across the land, reaching toward a horizon marked by scattered buildings and a single standing tree. The vegetation fills most of the composition, giving the scene a sense of open, cultivated space under a quiet sky. Painted in 1885 in oil, this work by Georges Seurat is held at the National Galleries of Scotland. Seurat, who lived from 1859 to 1891, was a French painter associated with Neo-impressionism and pointillism, and he is also known for A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. One detail worth noticing is the lone tree standing near the distant buildings, breaking the flatness of the horizon and anchoring the eye amid the dense color of the field.
