Story
A quiet stretch of sandy shore meets calm blue water and open sky, the whole scene set within a painted dark blue border that frames the composition on every side. The image is built from small, distinct dabs of color rather than blended brushwork, giving the water and sand a soft, shimmering texture. This piece, titled Seascape (Gravelines), was created in 1890 in oil on panel and is held at the National Gallery of Art. Georges Seurat (1859–1891), a French painter, worked in the Neo-impressionist movement and developed the pointillist technique seen here. Looking closely, the countless tiny strokes of blue, white, and tan merge at a distance into a tranquil, glowing coastal view, while the enclosing dark border sets the delicate scene apart like a window onto the shore.
