Story
A stand of trees rises in a wooded setting at Pontaubert, their vertical trunks surrounded by low undergrowth and scattered foliage. The composition is built from countless small touches of paint, blending muted greens, yellows, and browns to form the shaded forest floor and the shadowed canopy above. This landscape painting was created in 1881 in oil and is held today at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The artist, Georges Seurat (1859–1891), worked in the pointillist technique associated with Neo-impressionism, an approach he also used in his notable work A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. One detail worth noticing is how the tall, narrow tree trunks stand out sharply against the dappled understory, giving the scene a quiet, structured rhythm despite the dense buildup of color beneath them.
