Story
A sweeping, abstract view opens from above, where pale white and cream shapes curve and pool like water seen from a height, each form outlined by dark, winding edges. Around these pale shapes, the surrounding space fills with green, orange, and brown tones, suggesting shoreline, foliage, and earth beyond the water's surface. The painting was made in 1924 using oil, and it is held today at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It came to the museum through a bequest tied to the Alfred Stieglitz Collection. Georgia O'Keeffe (1887–1986), an American artist, painted it with the same attention to organic form seen in her larger body of work. One detail worth noticing is how the dark lines bordering the white forms give the composition a sense of structure amid its otherwise fluid, abstract shapes.
