Story

A deep purple blossom marked with fine white streaks rises against a pale blue sky, framed by broad green leaves that curve around its form. The flower and foliage dominate the composition, pressing close to the edges of the canvas. This piece was painted in 1930 using oil, and it is held at the National Gallery of Art. Georgia O'Keeffe (1887–1986) was an American artist. Looking closely, the contrast between the cool sky and the dark, almost shadowed petals draws attention to the delicate white markings threading through the purple surface, giving the bloom a quiet intensity that holds the eye within the layered green leaves surrounding it.
