Story
A flower fills the composition in extreme close-up, its green leaves curling around dark central shapes rendered in blue and black, all set against a pale blue background. The forms are abstracted so that the bloom reads almost as pure shape and color rather than a literal plant, with the dark core drawing the eye inward. This oil painting, titled Jack-in-the-Pulpit No. IV, was created in 1930 and is held at the National Gallery of Art. Georgia O'Keeffe (1887–1986) was an American artist who painted this image. Worth noticing is how the deep blue-black center seems to hover against the lighter surrounding tones, giving the flower an almost otherworldly glow within the tight, cropped framing.
