Story
A single sunflower fills the frame, its yellow petals opening around a dense green center, the thick stem rising below while an open blue sky stretches behind it, the whole composition shown in tight close-up. Georgia O'Keeffe painted this work titled Sunflower, New Mexico, I in 1935, in oil on canvas, and it is held at the Cleveland Museum of Art. The piece came to the museum through a bequest from the artist herself. O'Keeffe (1887–1986) was an American painter. Looking closely, the contrast between the warm yellow bloom and the cool blue backdrop gives the flower a sense of weight and presence, as though it were viewed from very near, with every curve of the petals and the ridged texture of the stem rendered in careful detail against the open expanse of sky.
