Beech Grove I

Story

Slender beech trunks rise in close ranks, their bark a cool blue-grey, standing above a ground thick with rust-colored fallen leaves. The repeated verticals give the woodland a quiet, patterned rhythm, as if the trees themselves formed a screen. Painted in oil in 1902, the work comes from Gustav Klimt, an Austrian artist associated with Art Nouveau, Jugendstil, and Symbolism. The piece carries the credit line 2479 A, marking its museum provenance.
