Story
A woman sits upright, enveloped in a shimmering gold dress that merges with a glittering gold background covered in geometric motifs. Her pale face and hands stand out against the surrounding brilliance, giving her figure a quiet, almost regal presence. The subject depicted is Adele Bloch-Bauer, shown within a composition that treats the whole surface as a field of ornament. This portrait was created in 1907 using oil, and it is held at the Neue Galerie. Gustav Klimt (1862–1918), an Austrian artist associated with Art Nouveau, also produced another notable work titled Adele Bloch-Bauer II. One detail worth noticing is how the patterned gold surface blurs the line between the sitter's clothing and the space around her, making her form seem to dissolve into the decorative background.
