Roses under the Trees

Story

A thick carpet of blossoms covers the ground beneath a stand of trees, with specks of purple, yellow, and white scattered across the greenery in gentle, dabbed strokes. No clear horizon or sky breaks through the foliage, so the whole scene feels close and flattened into pattern. The piece is an oil on canvas completed in 1905. Gustav Klimt, an Austrian painter (1862–1918), worked within Art Nouveau, Jugendstil, and Symbolism, and is also known for Danaë.
