Story
A market stand overflows with fresh produce, arranged in loose piles across a sheet of white paper. Yellow lemons sit near green apples, with red grapes and dark berries clustered close by, while tomatoes and leafy vegetables fill out the display. The arrangement feels casual, as if captured during an ordinary moment of commerce rather than staged for formal observation. This piece was painted in 1881 in oil and belongs to the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. Gustave Caillebotte, who lived from 1848 to 1894, worked within the Impressionist movement. One detail worth noticing is how the white paper beneath the fruit catches light differently depending on what rests above it, giving the whole display a sense of texture and weight despite its simple presentation.
