Story

Figures with umbrellas move across a damp, cobbled street in Paris, flanked by tall buildings in soft grey, beige, and brown tones. The wet stones and overcast light give the scene a quiet, muted atmosphere. This oil painting was made in 1877 by Gustave Caillebotte, a French artist associated with Impressionism. Caillebotte, who lived from 1848 to 1894, is also known for Les raboteurs de parquet. The painting is held at the Art Institute of Chicago.
