Story

A black wrought iron railing, decorated with curling scrollwork, stretches across the foreground, framing a street below that dissolves into haze under muted blues and grays. Beyond the metalwork, rooftops and buildings blur softly into the distance, suggesting a city seen from above through filtered light. The painting, titled View from a balcony, was created in 1880 by Gustave Caillebotte using oil, and it is held today at the Van Gogh Museum. Caillebotte, a French painter who lived from 1848 to 1894, worked within the Impressionist movement and also produced the notable painting Paris Street; Rainy Day. One detail worth noticing is how the ornate ironwork contrasts sharply with the softened, atmospheric rendering of the street scene beyond it, giving the composition a layered sense of depth between the solid railing and the dissolving cityscape.
