Story
Sailboats rest at anchor along the Seine at Argenteuil, their masts rising above the water near weathered wooden dock structures in the foreground. The scene unfolds in muted greens, browns, and grays, giving the river an overcast, quiet stillness. Painted in 1883, this work belongs to Gustave Caillebotte, a French artist (1848–1894) associated with Impressionism, who also worked as an engineer and etcher.
Where it works
Muted artwork suited to living rooms and bedrooms, and to restaurants, in a horizontal format.
