Story

A woman stands against a plain blue backdrop, dressed in a red velvet gown and an elaborate jeweled necklace, her head covered by an ornate headdress. The painting, done in oil on panel in 1536, presents her with careful attention to texture and detail. The artist, Hans Holbein the Younger (1497–1543), worked within the German Renaissance and Northern Renaissance traditions, also known for his piece The Ambassadors.
