Story

A seated figure dressed in somber garments and a dark cap rests his hand on a letter at a cloth-covered table, set before a patterned blue backdrop. The piece was rendered in oil on oak panel in 1532 and now belongs to the Frick Collection. The artist, Hans Holbein the Younger (1497–1543), worked within the German Renaissance and Northern Renaissance traditions, also known for the Darmstadt Madonna.
