Story

An elderly gentleman turns his head to the side, dressed in a somber black cap and heavy dark clothing, set against a plain gray backdrop. The piece is painted in oil on panel, completed in 1540, and depicts Sir William Butts, a physician of his era. Hans Holbein the Younger, born in 1497 and died in 1543, worked within the German Renaissance and Northern Renaissance traditions.
