Story
A gathering of roses fills a dark bowl and dish set on a wooden table, their white, pink, red, and yellow petals standing out against a plain, neutral backdrop. The arrangement is simple, with the blooms clustered close together and no other objects sharing the table. This piece, titled Roses in a Bowl and Dish, was painted in 1885 by Henri Fantin-Latour in oil, and it is held at the Clark Art Institute. Fantin-Latour, who lived from 1836 to 1904 and worked in France, is also known for his painting A Studio at Les Batignolles. One detail worth noticing is how the dark vessels holding the flowers deepen the contrast with the pale background, drawing attention to the varied colors of the petals themselves.
Where it works
