Story
A cluster of grapes in white, green, and dark hues fills a bowl set on a pale white cloth, with a single red carnation resting beside it, all set against a deep, shadowy backdrop. The composition draws attention through this contrast of light fruit and dark surroundings, with the carnation adding a sharp accent of color. The piece was painted in 1880 by Henri Fantin-Latour in oil, and it is held today at the National Gallery of Art. Fantin-Latour, a French artist who lived from 1836 to 1904, created the notable work Homage to Delacroix. Worth noticing is how the pale cloth beneath the bowl seems to glow softly against the darkness surrounding the arrangement.
