Vase of Chrysanthemums

Story

A pale, light-colored vase holds a gathering of white chrysanthemums, set against a dark olive-green backdrop and resting on a wooden tabletop. The blooms seem to catch what little light there is, their petals standing out sharply from the shadowed setting around them. This oil painting was completed in 1871 by Henri Fantin-Latour and is held today at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Fantin-Latour, a French artist born in 1836 and died in 1904, is associated with French Realism. The way the pale flowers press against the deep green ground gives the whole arrangement a quiet, concentrated presence worth lingering over.
