Story

A simplified face emerges amid patterned flowers and angular architectural shapes rendered in blue, gold, orange, and green. The composition is built from ceramic tile, ground marble, and plaster. Its maker, Henri Matisse (1869–1954), was a French artist associated with Fauvism. The piece entered the Toledo Museum of Art through funds tied to the Libbey Endowment, a gift from Edward Drummond Libbey.
