Story

From a balcony, two figures gaze down upon a bustling square filled with blossoms, tall palms, and a round-roofed structure rising in the distance. The scene captures a lively gathering below, rendered with bright color and loose brushwork. Painted in oil in 1922 by Henri Matisse (1869–1954), a French artist associated with Fauvism, the piece entered the Baltimore Museum of Art through a collection assembled by its donors.
