Story
A woman with dark hair and striking blue eyes stands against a warm orange backdrop, dressed in a bright yellow garment and adorned with a jeweled necklace. Around her, curling decorative spirals fill the space, giving the composition a flattened, patterned quality that suggests a symbolic figure rather than a specific individual. This piece, called L'Asie, was painted in 1946 in oil and now belongs to the Kimbell Art Museum. It is an allegory, using the single figure to stand for a broader idea rather than depicting a real event or portrait. The painting was made by Henri Matisse, a French artist associated with Fauvism, whose notable work Dance remains well known. One detail worth noticing is how the spirals seem to echo the curves of the necklace, tying the ornament visually into the surrounding background pattern.
