Story

A woman reclines across the canvas, her skin rendered in warm terracotta pink, her hair a deep brown, set against a backdrop of blue and white geometric patterning; she holds a yellow balloon in one hand. The figure is identified as Lydia Délectorsckaya. The painting, titled Large Reclining Nude, was made in 1935 by Henri Matisse in oil and now belongs to the Baltimore Museum of Art, having come from a collection formed by Dr. Claribel Cone and Miss Etta Cone of Baltimore, Maryland. Matisse, a French artist born in 1869 and died in 1954, was associated with Fauvism and also created the work known as Blue Nude. Worth noticing is how the geometric pattern behind her flattens the space, pressing the reclining body forward against the decorative backdrop.
