Story

A reclining woman rests near a checkerboard and scattered objects, rendered on cream-colored paper in a loose, linear sketch. Henri Matisse made the drawing using pen and black ink with scraping, building the figure through sparse, searching lines rather than shading. Matisse, who lived 1869–1954, was a French artist associated with Fauvism, and the work entered the Baltimore Museum of Art through the collection formed by Dr. Claribel Cone and Miss Etta Cone of Baltimore, Maryland.
