Story
A gathered bunch of roses and daisies rises from a vase, set beside a pale compote dish holding mandarins, while loose lemons and other fruit rest across a patterned cloth, the backdrop kept soft and understated. The composition brings together blossoms, citrus, and a simple bowl in a quiet domestic arrangement. Henri Matisse painted this still life in 1924 in oil, and it is now held at the Dallas Museum of Art. Matisse, who lived from 1869 to 1954, was a French artist associated with Fauvism and also created the painting Dance. One detail worth noticing is how the fruit scattered near the compote echoes the rounded shapes of the blossoms above, tying the lower and upper parts of the arrangement together across the tablecloth's pattern.
