Story
A woman rests with her eyes closed at a table crowded with potted plants, fruit, and small decorative objects, the whole scene rendered in green, purple, yellow, and brown tones. The arrangement, Still Life with Sleeping Woman, was painted in 1940 in oil and is held today at the National Gallery of Art, having come from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon. Its painter, Henri Matisse (1869–1954), a French artist, worked within Fauvism and also created the celebrated composition Dance. Looking closely, the clutter of foliage and objects around the sleeping figure gives the quiet pose a sense of being nearly swallowed by its surroundings, as color and pattern press in from every side of the table.
