Story
A quiet room opens onto a tabletop arrangement where a round bowl of goldfish sits among flowers and curving sculptural shapes, all set down in strong washes of blue, red, and yellow. The whole scene is pulled together through color rather than fine detail, so the furniture, plants, and objects seem to merge into one glowing surface. The painting was made in 1912 by Henri Matisse, worked in oil, and is held today at the Barnes Foundation. Matisse, who lived from 1869 to 1954, was a French artist associated with Fauvism, a movement built on daring, intense color choices. Looking closely, the blue fishbowl stands out as the brightest anchor of the composition, drawing the eye through the layered forms around it.
