The Joy of Life (Le Bonheur de vivre)

A crowd of unclothed men and women fills a dreamlike countryside scene, their bodies arranged among rolling hills and trees under a sky touched with warm color. The figures recline, embrace, and dance together, surrounded by patches of glowing yellow, green, orange, and pink that give the landscape an almost musical rhythm. This oil painting was created in 1905 and belongs to the Barnes Foundation. Henri Matisse (1869–1954), associated with Fauvism, also made the painting Dance. Looking closely, the way the bright hues bleed into one another across the figures and foliage gives the whole composition a sense of warmth and movement rather than strict realism.
