Story

A seated woman wears a coat marked with purple stripes, surrounded by yellow blossoms and an array of patterned items, set against a backdrop of green, red, and white. The composition comes from 1937, rendered in oil, and is held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The painter, Henri Matisse (1869–1954), was a French artist associated with Fauvism and also created Dance. One detail worth noticing is how the striped coat stands out sharply against the surrounding bands of color, pulling the eye toward the figure despite the busy arrangement of blooms and objects around her.
