Jaguar Attacking a Horse

Story

A jaguar lunges at a horse within a dense jungle setting, the predator's attack set against thick tropical growth. The scene centers on this struggle between the two animals, rendered amid heavy vegetation that fills the canvas. This piece belongs to the genre of animal art and reflects the naïve art style the artist favored. It was painted in 1910 using oil on canvas, and it is held at the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts. Henri Rousseau (1844–1910), a French painter associated with primitivism, also created the notable work The Dream. Elsewhere in his output, dense foliage appears again, as in a composition showing a white peacock surrounded by green tropical leaves and pink and yellow flowers under a pale blue sky, suggesting his recurring fascination with layered plant life and vivid color contrasts within imagined jungle spaces.
