Story
A bearded man dressed in dark, formal clothing stands at the front of the scene, holding a palette as he faces outward, with a river stretching behind him beneath a sky filled with drifting clouds. A ship floats on the water, and the whole setting is rendered in blues, whites, and earthy browns that give the landscape a quiet, layered depth. Behind the figure, small details hint at modern life, including the Eiffel Tower and a hot air balloon rising into the air. This self-portrait was painted in 1890 in oil, and it is held today at the National Gallery Prague. The artist, Henri Rousseau (1844–1910), worked within naïve art, bringing a flat, direct style to his figures and settings. Notice how the paintbrush he carries anchors the entire composition, declaring his identity as a painter standing within his own imagined world.
