Story

A mustached man stares out at the viewer, wearing a burgundy cap and dark jacket, cradling a striped cat in his arms while an industrial backdrop stretches behind him. The figure is understood to represent Pierre Loti, rendered as a portrait within the genre of naïve art. Henri Rousseau completed this piece in 1906, and it is now held at the Kunsthaus Zürich. Rousseau, born in 1844 and died in 1910, worked in France and is also known for his piece The Dream. Looking closely, the pairing of the striped cat against the distant factory-like scenery gives the composition an odd tension between the personal and the mechanical, a detail that rewards a second look at how Rousseau placed his sitter against such an unexpected setting.
