The Pink Candle

Story

A tabletop arrangement centers on a slim pink candle rising from a black holder, set among a wedge of cheese, scattered fruit, and a dark bottle of beer. The items rest on a white cloth, with a brown fabric draped behind to frame the scene. This still life was painted in 1908 in oil and belongs to the collection of The Phillips Collection. The painter, Henri Rousseau (1844–1910), was a French artist associated with naïve art, and his work also includes The Dream. One detail worth noticing is how the candle's slender pink form stands out sharply against the muted tones of the cheese and bottle, giving the quiet grouping a small, glowing focal point amid the otherwise plain household objects.
