Story

A river scene unfolds with a stone arched crossing, clusters of hillside houses, and slender flying craft hovering above the water. Tall trees rise along the banks, rendered in layered greens, soft whites, and earthy browns that give the scene a quiet, patterned stillness. The oil on canvas was completed in 1908 by Henri Rousseau (1844–1910), a French painter associated with naïve art and primitivism.
