Story
A tall tree rises above dense green hedges in a sheltered garden corner, with white buildings glowing against a blue sky behind the foliage. The composition balances the vertical thrust of the tree trunk with the softer, rounded masses of trimmed greenery lining the path below. This oil painting, created in 1910, is held at the J. Paul Getty Museum. The artist, Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida, was a Spanish painter born in 1863 and died in 1923. One detail worth noticing is the contrast between the crisp white walls of the buildings and the layered shades of green that fill most of the canvas, creating a sense of depth as the eye travels from the shaded hedges toward the sunlit structures in the distance.
