Story
A courtyard glows under warm sunlight, its walls draped in climbing ivy and its floor laid with patterned tiles, while buildings recede into the distance under a palette of greens, blues, and earthy browns. The scene captures a quiet architectural corner, rendered with attention to the play of light across stone and foliage. This painting, Court of the Dances, Alcázar, Sevilla, was created in 1910 using oil, and it is held at the J. Paul Getty Museum. The digital image is made available through the museum's Open Content Program. The artist, Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida (1863–1923), was a Spanish painter whose work often explored the effects of natural light outdoors. Worth noticing is how the tiled floor catches reflected sunlight, drawing the eye toward the shaded archways beyond.
