Story

A sprawling branch of staghorn sumac spreads across a plain backdrop, its feathery green leaflets paired along the stem beneath a thick cluster of deep red-burgundy blooms. Johannes Simon Holtzbecher rendered this plant study in gouache in 1649, now held at Statens Museum for Kunst.
