Story
A wide valley opens beneath forested mountains, with a river winding through the lower ground and small figures gathered in the foreground as the sky glows with the colors of a setting sun. The scene is rendered with careful attention to the layered hills and the warm light settling over the water. This is a landscape painting completed in 1820, done in oil, and held today at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. The artist, John Glover (1767–1849), worked as a landscape painter holding British-Australian citizenship. One detail worth lingering on is the golden tone of the sunset sky, which spreads across the upper half of the composition and casts a soft, warm light down onto the mountains, the river, and the figures standing quietly below.
