Story

Cattle graze in a quiet valley, standing near a still lake bordered by wooded hills under a soft blue sky. The water lies calm beneath the slopes, with light suggesting the early hour named in the title. The composition is rendered in oil, completed in 1824. John Glover, a British-Australian landscape painter born in 1767 and died in 1849, made this work, now held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Where it works

Warm-toned artwork suited to living rooms and bedrooms, and to hotel lobbies, in a horizontal format.
