Great Blue Heron

Story

A great blue heron rises among tall marsh grasses, its wings lifted as if steadying for flight, rendered in soft greys, blues, and browns against a plain pale backdrop. The illustration dates to 1834 and belongs to the naturalist tradition of careful bird observation. It was created by John James Audubon (1785–1851), a French-American artist best known for The Birds of America.
