Story
A pair of figures dressed in pale clothing paint at an easel near a stream, with thick green trees rising behind them under a soft, light-toned sky. John Singer Sargent made this oil on canvas, mounted on masonite, in 1888, working within the Impressionism movement. The piece comes from the Daniel J. Terra Collection, now held at the Terra Foundation for American Art, and reflects Sargent's standing as an American painter born in 1856 and died in 1925.
