Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

Story

A towering caterpillar perches atop a mushroom, pulling at a hookah while a small girl stands below, caught in conversation with the creature. The scene is rendered in black ink, sketched with careful linework, created in 1865. The artist, John Tenniel (1820–1914), was a British caricaturist, also known for Dropping the Pilot, who illustrated Alice's Adventures in Wonderland with this image.
