A Vision

Story

A nude female figure rendered in golden-orange hues stands upright at the center of the composition, framed by two vertical staffs decorated with symbolic ornaments, all set against a pale blue background. The figure's elongated pose and the flanking staffs give the image a sense of careful balance and quiet formality. The painting, titled A Vision, was made by Joseph Stella in 1925–26 using oil on canvas, and it is held at the Art Institute of Chicago, having come to the museum through a gift connected to the Albert Kunstadter Family Foundation. Stella, who was Italian-American and lived from 1877 to 1946, worked within the Futurism movement. One detail worth noticing is how the golden-orange tones of the body stand out sharply against the surrounding pale blue, drawing attention to the stillness of the central figure amid the ornamented staffs that frame her on either side.
