Brooklyn Bridge

Story

Steel beams rise and cross in white, gray, and blue, their angled lines cutting through tall vertical forms that suggest the bridge's towering structure. The composition breaks the span into fragmented, overlapping geometry, giving the structure a sense of motion and force. Rendered in oil, the piece reflects Joseph Stella's engagement with Futurism and Precisionism, movements that embraced industrial subjects and dynamic forms. Stella, who lived from 1877 to 1946, was Italian-American. The painting came to its collection as a gift from the Société Anonyme.
