Story
A vertical column of color anchors the composition, built from angular shapes in green, blue, yellow, and white that break the picture plane into fragments. Shards of geometric form radiate outward, suggesting movement and energy rather than a fixed scene. This piece, titled Spring (The Procession), was painted in 1915 in oil and is held at the Yale University Art Gallery. The artist, Joseph Stella (1877–1946), worked within Futurism, a movement that embraced dynamic fragmentation of form to suggest motion and modern life. One detail worth noticing is how the greens and yellows cluster near the center while cooler blues and whites push toward the edges, giving the structure a sense of inner density surrounded by looser, scattered pieces, as if the whole arrangement were caught mid-motion rather than settled into any final shape or static order.
Where it works
