Story

A seated figure dressed in black, topped with a patterned blue hat, cradles a round orange form against a dense red backdrop. The composition sets the dark clothing and bright sphere in sharp contrast with the saturated field behind them. Rendered in oil, the piece comes from Joseph Stella (1877–1946), an Italian-American artist associated with Futurism and Precisionism, who also worked as an architectural drafter and collagist.
